More About Us
The Massies Mill Ruritan Club, chartered in 1951, is part of the Woodrow Wilson District Ruritans. It was founded by Carl Raines, Sr., who served as the club’s first president. One of the club’s earliest accomplishments was organizing the Piney River Volunteer Fire Department, which was established in 1954 with the purchase of its first fire truck.
Over the years, the Massies Mill Ruritan Club has supported numerous community initiatives, including the Scouts, Future Farmers of America, Nelson County public schools, youth athletics, and various civic improvements. Initially, meetings were held in church social halls and other community spaces. In the 1960s, the club purchased its current property, and the building was completed by 1970. It is dedicated to Carl Raines, who tragically lost his life in the Hurricane Camille flood of 1969.
The Club’s building and grounds serve as a valuable community resource, available for rent for weddings, family reunions, meetings, and other events.
The Club raises funds through regular activities such as Bingo (held on the second Thursday of each month), a Classic Car Show, and building rentals. In the past year, the Club donated over $13,000 to local community groups and individuals.
Monthly dinner meetings are held for fellowship, information sharing, and club business.
